| Was surprised to see the record Walking Around the Town by the Hymes Sisters on one of your playlist. I am one of the Hymes Sisters. I am delighted that people still listen to the old record. Thanks, Kay |
 |
| Started going to Catacombs in 69 -everything about it was magic. Sometimes we did Friday night and also they started a Sunday afternoon session (to rival the Chateau Impney 4 to 7 I think). Best was always Saturday night when the stage was full - pride of place going to Tyrone who was taller than anyone and could dance better than anyone. Saw a few people there - Oscar Tony Junior was good but I think it was Bob & Earl who didn`t go down too well and were removed. Remember Crocker playing First I look at the purse for the last time as it was being rereleased the following week - sure enough Jimmy Yound was playing it by Tuesday and he never played it again. Great site! |
 |
| Excellent site which I have added to my favourites . |

| In my lonely hotel room surfing the web, took in the atmosphere of some of the tunes I played. Miss the 70`s so much - unrepeatable....the crowds, the sounds, pure magic. Glad to have played a part in a unique underground scene, crowd reaction was the essential dynamic in those days I would feed off the buzz all nite long.
The vinyl, the characters and the gear, crazy but happy times.Managed to survive and lead a vanilla life. Hard to explain to anyone who was not on the scene in those golden 70`s - 75 was the best by mile - as the Yum Yums said - gonna be a big thing........
Hope you got the same as me............Keep on guys. |
 |

| first got into northern soul at the Parkway disco`s, does anyone else remember them ???? Loved going to skegness from me hols, and danced the nite away. |
 |
| I used to go to the Catacombs when Blue max and pepi played. What a place!! only 15 years old !.. would lie about where i was going so not to miss the all nighters ( change of clothes in the addias bag.. brilliant days . Does anyone remember the best male dancers in the club at that time Jethro, Derby ,steve etc.. the BEST !!! and not to forgetr little Kim (RIP) she was amazing. Used to get skirts tailored so they would swirl when dancing. On the last night it was ram packed - i had enough gloss paint on my clothes as it was peeling off the brick walls with the heat i could off filled a paint tin. Anyone remember the tune by Ila van - Cant stop loving dat man ? just played it for old times sake. Great days no trouble just dance, dance dance ( wasnt that a tune ?)
some day after the Cats closed i went back with some mates the doors open.. it was empty there were still leaflets in the little booth at the top of the stairs and flyers about the death of the CATS. We took a cassette we had recorded on the night .. really bad sound but we danced on the dance floor the 3 of us and after some hours said a final goodbye .
THen it was Wigan.. coaches at 10.30pm .. grat times but nothing could compareto the intamacy of the CATS ... Long Live the Catacombs !! |
 |
| Hi soul boys, Otis Redding...................... |
 |
| Can anyone tell me who sang Mr Piterfull, know the commitments sung it in the film the commitments. |
 |
| I can remember Graham Evans (and Fred) from the Druid`s disco very well from the early/mid 1970`s as they were one of our competitors in the Hinckley area: I ran the Superstar Mobile Disco around there from 1972 to 1982. In the early days the Druid`s disco were already well known for their Motown, Stax, Atlantic, with a liberal sprinkling of imported American Soul thrown in, and I can remember Graham telling me about his new venture into Northern Soul and the formation of the Hinckley Soul Club. Unfortunately we then lost touch as I went my way and he went his, though I did keep hearing feedback on how well he and his colleagues were doing with their Northern Soul gigs. It was thanks to these guys that at my own (Pub and Club type) venues I was still able to play some of my own commercial favourites like Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor, Chuck Wood - Seven Days Too Long, etc., along with uptempo Motown e.g. R Dean Taylor - Ghost In My House. (By the way, I had to smile when I read your web page on Nuneaton`s Bond Gate Social Club. The `Vampire` DJ mentioned there was an old friend of mine, John Adams, who relaunched himself later as the `Funky Parrot`. I`m surprised he had any soul-type music at all at that time as he was a former bass player in a rock band, and his own taste in music was 1950`s Rock n` Roll! Another one I eventually lost touch with - I think he ended up doing Hospital Radio). Anyway I think this website, along with its outside links, are a good and lasting testimony to Northern Soul and I have to congratulate everyone involved. As a footnote, you`ve aged well Graham! - Or did you find a photo from thirty years ago to use on your intro page? (Ouch, that hurt! - But all those years ago we were always having a go at each other weren`t we?). [paynekg@btinternet.com] |

| Great site, recognise heaps.Went cats..then 1st nite wigan with cats crew..went va vas, st ives, mecca, ritz, many alldayers. Worked for RCA, hung out on stage wigan with m ellis and d evison, interviewed exciters on my cassette player. Broke in through beachcomber with 20 other souls when really packed one nite at wigan, crawled thru holes with only ciggy lighters for light..followed the pulsating beat..removed panel under stage to come out right onto dancefloor to amazed onlookers, put our bags down and started dancin! Saw fontella bass, bob an earl at cats, eggy and jed stone goin off to bob relf! If u remember me: snappergirl2008@hotmail.com.au. I remember u swish.RIGHT ON OKEH..KTF |

| Hi there found you on me search engine, what a well designed and user friendly site you have, GREAT JOB.
I have been on the scene since early 70`s, and always had a blast where ever we went, and like most people, I had a favorite place, this was CLEETHORPES, the pier and winter gardens run by Mary and Colin Chapman, to me was the ultimate week end.
Back in them days, I was known as Spud from Cambridge, and my Buddies and travel partners where, Wayne, Agga and Jim from Barrow in Furness, and Stuart Naylor from St Ives in Cambridgeshire.
Stu moved to Australia, but would like to meet up with the others again, any one who knows owt on these three amigo`s, or any one who remembers me, please get in touch.
I can be reached at, dertyl297@aol.com or taylordeejay@hotmail.com

IN THE MORNING IT WAS OFF TO THE ESPRESSO BONGO FOR BREAKFAST THE TRAIN TO BOLTON AND A AFTERNOON SPENT DANCING AT THE BONE YARD. WHEN THE WHEEL CLOSED DOWN IN BRAZENORE STREET AND MOVED TO WHITWORTH STREET I HELP PAINT THE NEW PREMISES IT WAS NEVER THE SAME AS THE OLD WHEEL. |

| Swish,
No worries mate, we can only speak as we find. Maybe I missed it all (good job too)
Perhaps we should continue any further `yap` to the `have your say` bit of this website else Dave is gonna chew us up (lol)
KTF Mif |
 |
| Mif,
First of all thank you for supplying that tape of the Cats to this website, loved it.
I also do NOT want to fall out immediately we have met.
However there were certain lads particullarly from Derby (Fiac) (Lighting) for example
who were especially out to roll. I became mates with these boys over the years but I remember specifically one night outside the Cats when news filtered through that a chemist had been done and the gear was arriving. The Derby boys had a massive fight with the Wolves lads to try and capture the gear. (outside the Cats not inside).
Also I was once offered an entire collection of sounds which had been ripped off from the Cats (I was still in the Cats at the time) (I am talking top sounds, the business) for a pittance.
I refused to entertain it.
Cheers
Swish |
 |
| Swish,
You might like to try this link
http://www.northernsoulmusic.co.uk
Nicks site has more music than any NS site I have ever found.
By the way I dont agree with you over the friendly nature of the clubs. I attended for a fair few years and never even saw a scrap. OK there were drugs, there were plain clothes cops and I even got strip searched once at a motorway service area (Hilton)after a night at the Cats. The real soulies (speed takers or otherwise) never caused any bother to each other. Nuff said. |
 |
| I feel I must write again how brilliant this web site is.
I can hear hundreds of dynamite sounds in an instant...........fantastic!
A lot of websites are just there to try and sell something. Obviously, not this one.
Have a question though.
I wanted to hear DEARLY BELOVED by JACK MONGOMERY.
By the time I had down loaded REAL PLAYER the track (daily anthem) had changed.
Can I still hear this somehow? |
 |
| What a great website this is. I find it incredible I can come on here and here LIVE recordings from the Cats etc as I went to all these places.
I loved these times with all my heart and soul and always shall, nothing can replace them, not ever.
It isn`t true though, that these places were always safe and friendly, not by a long chalk.
The words SQUAD and ROLLERS spring to mind for a start.
A year ago or two I used to visit another Northern web-site where the propietor tried to pretend that these things never happened. Inevitably we fell out, as he thought people who took gear were idiots, whilst I thought people who didn`t take gear were idiots!
HA HA HA!
If anyone remembers me or just wants to chat bobswish@hotmail.com is my e-mail address. |
 |
| Found your site by chance when searching for some Steve Brookstein info. Great site and thanks sooo much for that 4 Vandals clip!

 |
| Just surfed onto this site. Wow brilliant stuff here. Great info on national venues where `our music` has taken shape.
My first taste of Soul was at a mates house, he lived over the road from me (Bless ya Ted Hall) He then told me about the Catacombs in Wolves. Off we went. What a blast, climbing the stairs and hearing that thumping beat from behind the closed doors. Sign in and in we went, the music, the heat, the atmosphere all hit you right between the eyes
Long brick corridors dripping wet with the sweat of a few hundered soulies crammed inside. A dance floor that always seemed too small for all those spinning sliding soul dancers and the music bouncing off the low ceilings. The floor was full but when a big `tune` was played there was a rush for everyone else to get their space on the boards. Well a big thanks to Blue Max , Pep and Alan and guests for playing the music that shaped my life.
The Torch was another venue we attended. Much bigger than the Cats it had a similar atmosphere but due to its size I never found it as intimate. Great place though brought lots of badges here (sadly sold them)
Best thing about real NS venues is there is never any trouble. Everyone is up for the music. Everyone is there to have a laugh and a damn good time.
Lets keep it that way.
Keep the faith.

| just a few lines to say that I was wondering about my old friends from the Twisted Wheel and where they are now. Enjoyed reading the web-site and thought I would add my name. My Mother thought I was baby sitting when infact I was at the Twisted-Wheel with my sister Valda and friend Susan Walsh. We also had good times at the Wigan Casino and the Bird Trap at Brierfield. We all used to pile in a van and head off to Manchester, it was absolutely brilliant and gave us the opportunity to see some of the best R & B and soul acts who I listen to when I want to cheer myself up. Thanks x |

| This is one of the best northern sites on the net apart from www.northernsoulmusic.co.uk nice design too, just as good as www.northernsoulmusic.co.uk, takes a lot of work to keep it like this doesn`t it, I know www.northernsoulmusic.co.uk takes up most of my time too, did I mention my site.
Keep up the good work it gets better every time I look, a bit like ...........no nuff said.

| Hi there, found your web site and how brilliant is it??? absolutely love the live venues spot, and it brought back so many many memories for me, especially the notts palais one, where me and the hubby were regulars. Just to wish you all at Hinckley continued success and if we here in Lincoln can enjoy the length of the time that you have had in keeping the faith, we will be happy, as on the 18th of December we will be celebrating the East Lincoln Soul Clubs 1st anniversary. Many thanks for your time and keep up the excellent web site. |

| On the surf, late Sat nite came across your site, enjoyed it. I'm the Chair of Seaside Soul Club of Morecambe. We're a bunch of geezers who enjoy the full scope of soul, some Northern some modern. Our venue "Upstairs Downstairs" is only a one floor venue, however we try to hit the spot with each record. I suppose the main reason for sayin Hi is to simply make contact with like minded people close to ourselves. We have Soul Nites approx once a month which are well attended evenings, our website (main site) is to be launched in the next weeks, (current site http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/mhpweekender/index.jhtml) part of our 1st Anniversary celebrations, (Sat 30th September 2004) celebrations that we actually made it through the year considering a few outfits that come in to the area wanting to make a quick bit of coin out of a passion. We're a complete voluntary bunch of 10 with quality soul collections / DJ's within the ranks. So we should converse when im not so arsed. Anyway must shoot to bo bo's as my duties have been requested... |

| Just listened to Job Opening recorded live at Samantha's nite club in the seventies. I was the DJ spinning the sound. Look closely at the LH Samanthas advert and you'll see the name Howard below John V's name. What an incredible time and venue it was. We ran a superb venue in Sheffield that had a soul club in the week (originally Sunday, later on Wednesday's), with the all-nighter on the Friday. John (who I rated in the top four jocks in the country) gathered an amazing amount of talent for the niters and occasional all-dayer. I suppose we had the best of all worlds with the sophistication of Mecca sounds, and the raw northern beat from the Casino. Main stays in the big room were John, Frank (Ian Dewhurst), originally Twink (from Leeds), later Soul Sam, Paul Rowan (Leeds), with various top guests. I hosted the oldies room( the Hallam suite, later the Mayfair Suite), with various guests including Billy Paul (Wigan), Paul Curzon (Doncaster, Brill British collection), Derek Banner (Mansfield), and Rotherhams Derek Sheldon (named his daughter Sandie!). My apologies to any of the guys who were there and I didn't mention. During the week, John and I hosted a really friendly soul club with regulars coming in from Leeds, Doncaster, Mansfield, Chesterfield with of course the Sheffield locals..all great people..no trouble..many good friends..many happy memories. John Vincent has been running some excellent gigs in recent years, and has even dragged me and the ol' plastic disc's (vinyl/acetate really) out for several spots. Still amazed at the demand after all these years. For interest, John is organising an all-nighter in the original venue on Sat 23rd October and this should be an amazing re-union for many of us. He also runs regular monthly gigs in Sheffield and we had some great nites down there, quality sounds, with some really rare records on display. Enjoyed your web-site immensely. |

| I had to drop you a note...What a great website. I don't quite have your pedigree coz I was a bit late into Northern in 1975. I was only 14 and very tall for my age but I used to blag my way into Tiffany's, Long Lane, Halesowen with my elder sister and her crowd. I first visited Blackpool Mecca in 1975 or was it 1976 to see The Miracles who were just having a hit with "Love Machine" but never did get to any of the "great" venues (Casino, Torch etc). Consequently, I am more of a Levine disciple (Evelyn Thomas, L J Johnson etc) than a stomper fan though I don't suppose it is such an issue either way any more. My fave is still "You don't love me"-The Epitome of Sound though "I'm on my way"-Dean Parrish, "Hung up on your love"-The Montclairs and a track I half remember called "Seven day lover" are right up there too. I have forwarded this to my sis in the States just to make her feel old...it worked and she has forwarded it to some of her old pals too. She reckons that some of the faces are familiar and after laughing at some of the clothes, I had to remind her that some of her own fashion statements were a bit dodgy at the time. I will try to get over to one of your events...trouble is I don't think that 16 stone will squeeze into 28" waist Oxford bags anymore. |
 |
| Thanks for putting my fave tunes up on the excellent website. I read with interest about the Clarendon Club on Sunday nites will have to call in sometime. Trouble is, I've felt a bit isolated down here in Warwick from a soul point of view. The 'poor' Girlfriend gets
dragged along to soulnites when I go back up north to Burnley, but she's not into northern - will listen to motown though like most. Anyhow, I don't know another soulie in the area, and it would be nice to meet some. |

| Great Website. FYI, There is a Catacombs Reunion this Saturday at Wolverhampton Civic Hall. |
 |
| What a well produced and informative site you have. Since being stuck in the wilds of Florida for over 10 years I have managed to gain the interest of a few publications, and at least get an Internet Radio Show established, with supporting web site. You can see the site at www.SoulCruising.com so please take a look if you can. |
 |
| I have come across your site literally by accident. I am impressed by its content and the obvious hard work put in by all involved! The fact that there is reference to me on it is, I hasten to add, not the reason that I have formed this opinion! It is always good for an old rhythm and soul / northern soul exponent to keep in touch with old friends – and meet some new ones. From time to time I am resurrected and asked to do revival nights (the next one is the Clouds Club revival evening at the Assembly Rooms Derby on the 26th June). Anyway, keep up the great work and if you get a spare moment it would be good to hear from you. |

| I Had A Great 20 Years On The Scene, I Quit About 5 Years Ago ,Family,Work etc, I Still Have A Few Records And Have Recently Been Buying CDs. Thanks To Websites Such As Yours I Can Keep In Touch With What Is Going On Without Leaving The Comfort Of My Own Home. Keep Up The Good Work, Your Site Is Easily One Of The Best Soul Sites On The Web. |

| hi just been looking through your site yet again. ITS EXCELLENT. Will be there for 1st Anniversary. Great to see you dave after all these years, keep on keeping on . luv from jo and caron from nuneaton. |

| Hello HSC, I used to follow all the soul gigs in the late sixties/early seventies and met some people from Hinckley - probably about 1975. I became friendly with Barbara Hill ( met her in the Compass club in Torquay and kept in touch ), Pete Wileman and his sister and while scanning your site found photos of all. I am ? on the one with Nita, Pete Wileman and Rob Furborough, I think it was taken at Wigan. Do you have any e-mail addresses for Barbara or Pete, it would be good to get in touch. |
 |
| Just been reading the page on Samantha's Sheffield. I only went a couple of times but can confirm that two rooms were used. 'The big room' played newies as I remember ( play list from '75 brought back memories Prince George and Rosie Jones ) and 'The Hallam Suite' played oldies. On one occassion when I went I taped 30 minutes in the big room and 30 minutes from the Hallam Suite. I still play the tape even though the quality after 28 years is now not as good as it was. Whether two rooms were always used i don't know as I didn't go often enough. I have enjoyed looking through the site. Thanks. |

| My mother just sent me the link to the HSC web site.
You have done a great job, well done...... I am sure I have some photographs
from the 'good old days', The Junction, trips to Wigan Casino etc. I recall
Eggo, Tom King, Connie and myself leaving The Bounty at 11pm on Saturday's
for the Casino, and Sunday afternoon's crashed out in recovery!!!
Unfortunately, I have lost contact with many of my old buddies from Hinckley
as I now live in the USA. An idea for the site maybe a meeting page or similar
so that people (those that want to) can contact old friends and reminisce.
When I find my old album, I'll make some scans and email them to you. If the
album is still with my parents in Hinckley, I'll arrange with you to get the
pictures scanned there.
Keep the Faith...

| Hi,
I was wondering if you were going to put up anything about the Leicester All-nighters at the Odd-fellows club in the early 80´s? Probably the greatest all-nighter ever! I was on the Hinckley Soul scene in a big way myself from 81 through till the end of the 80´s. Good days...miss them a lot
KTF. Jim. |

| I’m very impressed with your site, how on earth do you remember all that stuff?
My names John and I live down the road in Nuneaton, up until 18 months ago I worked in Hinckley, until they close us down (Ferry Pickerings, Wace, Jarvis Porter). I’m just getting back into the scene, always loved the music since the early 70’s.
My earliest memories locally are…
Bond Gate
Co-op Social (Tuesdays I think)
Weddington Social (Thursdays I think)
(Co-op & Weddington not truly soul nights, but they played a fare bit)
Then later I remember nights, some just one offs.
One Chapel End Social clubs
The Chase
77 club (Chris King did that once)
Of course I came to Hinckley, I remember going to at least three venues…
The Connie Club
The Leisure Centre
Bounty (Back of) (I remember Paul Rudzitas being involved with this one).
It’s been a pleasure to read your site. |

| The website is just great. I was sitting hear carrying out my DBA tasks
when I thought it was high time for a spot of surfing.
Well what can I say, it is brilliant. The photo's are just fantastic not
