Stockingford Labour Club.

Location: Arbury Road, Nuneaton.

Date: 1978-79.

The dance floor at Wigan.

The Stockingford Labour Club is a working men's type club at the rear of a petrol station, accessed by a narrow gravel road. A good venue with a bar at one end and a raised stage at the other, it became Nuneaton's answer to the St. John's Ambulance Hall.

Local Nuneaton jocks played here, with guests from Hinckley. Special mention should be made of Paul Shaw, who spent a lot of time (and money) hunting for the elusive British release of the latest sounds. He would track them down and play them at Stockingford, to the delight and envy of the soulies present.

The music played at Stockingford leaned more to the Mecca influence, examples being 'Love Factory' - Eloise Laws, 'I Can See Him Loving You' - The Anderson Brothers (and also the slightly funkier Trieste version) and 'Happy Feeling' - Earth, Wind and Fire, plus more "traditional" tracks like 'Time Marches On' - Laine Hall, 'Don't Take It Out On This World' - Adam's Apples and 'I'm Your Pimp' - Skull Snaps. Oldies like 'Stay' - The Virginia Wolves and 'Girls Are Out To Get You' - The Fascinations were also popular. Label image of 'Girls Are Out To Get You' - The Fascinations on Mojo.
